The Simple Things-Part 2

"I like him."

"Okay."

"Does that bother you?"

"Okay."

"Josh! That was a question that requires more than a one word answer!"

He looked up. "As much as this might be a complete shock to you, I
don't care about your personal life!"

Donna sat down on the bed and ran a hand through her hair. "Well you
seemed to care before, so I just thought..."

"Go away."

"I mean, I only met him today, but there was.. something. I can feel
these things you know. Im a feeler."

"Go away!"

"Yeah."

Donna left the hotel room, leaving Josh alone for the first time that
day. He contemplated the events of the day for about 20 seconds,
until there was a knock on the door.

"Donna, I swear to god, I DON'T CARE!" He flung the door open, armed
with a list of reasons of why he didn't care.

Except Donna wasn't at the door.

"You talking to your imaginary friends again?" CJ asked.

"Do you need something?"

"Yeah. You." CJ suddenly had Josh's full attention.

"CJ, are you coming on to me?" He deadpanned.

"You've had a long day, I'm taking you down to get a drink. I know
how hard today was, I mean that pole just came out of nowhere-"

"Y'know, I've been meaning to thank you for your caring support all
day. I suppose I'm going to be hearing this from the three of you all
night?"

"The three of us?"

"Yeah. You, Toby, and Donna.."

"No, I'll be the only one making fun of you, don't worry."

"Oh, just you? Do you plan on taping their mouths shut?"

"Would you chill out? They're not coming with us."

"They're not? Why?"

"Because we need some us time. Face to face, man to man, Crazy car
driver to extremely intelligent.."

"Are you sure you haven't started those drinks already?"

CJ gave him no answer to this, pulled him out the door, and dragged
him down to the bar.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Josh, no matter how hard you try, you cannot open your door with a
credit card," CJ was sitting on the floor in the hallway, trying not
to laugh. Josh had two beers, which was one too many, and just
realized he didn't have his room key. "And where is your key anyways?"
"Donna has it. In her room. A nice room. A pretty room. An open room."
"You're kidding me. She doesn't trust you with a hotel key?" CJ shook
her head. "Come in my room, we'll call downstairs and get you a new
one."
Once inside the room, CJ dropped her things and went into the
bathroom to wash up. When she came back out, Josh had made himself
quite comfortable on her bed. "Just what do you think you're doing?"
Josh sat up and gave her his best puppy-dog look. "C'mon.. can I stay
here? It'll be like a sleepover!"
"Right. Except sleepovers usually don't include drunk wanna-be
politicians."
"Please?"
CJ sighed and realized that save throwing Josh out the door, this was
not a fight she was going to win. "Fine. But you steal the covers
from me, lamp-boy, and your ass is mine."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
CJ groaned, opened her eyes, and tried to figure out where she was.
It was early, and hotel rooms always made her a bit disoriented. And
she had had just enough alcohol for that "happy buzz" to be not-so-
happy. The sun was shining through the window, and yet the only thing
she could think about was getting a few more hours of sleep.

And then the blanket started to talk.

"Turn the lights off and go back t'sleep.. its early.." CJ turned
around and realized that instead of a blanket next to her, there was
a very rumpled Josh. It didn't surprise her that Josh was in bed with
her, she remembered his key fiasco from the night before. What did
surprise her was that somehow they had ended up in each other's arms.

Not that she was complaining. Josh was fairly, no very attractive,
and she certainly didn't mind waking up next to him. In fact she was
fairly certain that somewhere in her mind there were feelings for
him. But that's not what she needed to think about at that moment.
There were more important matters at hand. Like getting Josh back to
his room before anyone found out.

She moved Josh's arm, which had been draped across her waist, and
gently poked his shoulder to wake him up. "C'mon," she
whispered, "Time to get up."

Josh rolled over and immediately wished he hadn't. It was bright.
Very bright. And his head hurt. Not to mention the fact that he
wasn't quite sure where he was.

It was at that moment he realized CJ was next to him. Or more
specifically, cuddled up against him. "CJ?"

"Yeah?"

"Why are you in my room?"

CJ shook her head, got out of bed, and turned on the lights. "You
shouldn't be allowed to have anything to drink. Ever. You're in my
room, but not for long. We need to get you back before Donna realizes
you're gone and flips out." She picked up the phone and dialed the
front desk as Josh tried to get his bearings.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"What? You're kidding me. Seriously? 2-3 days? That's nuts. Yeah. but-
Okay. Yeah. Yeah. Bye." Toby flipped the phone shut and glared at an
undeterminable point on the wall.
"What's up?" Donna asked. They were all at the hospital again,
waiting for Sam to be discharged. Hopefully, they would be on their
way back to the White House by evening.
"DC's snowed in. We work for the leader of the free world, and yet
flaky white stuff can stop the country dead in it's tracks."
"We should do something about that," Josh added, and noticed the
stares he got in return. "So we're stuck here?"
"Pretty much."
"Think about this positively," CJ started, "We have at least a day or
two off.."
"And Chicago's a great city." Sam interjected.
Just then the door opened, and a doctor walked in.
"Wow. Full house here."
"Dr. Carter. Hello again," Donna smiled at him as he glanced around
the room. "Oh, this is CJ Cregg, Toby Ziegler, and Josh Lyman."
A chorus of greetings echoed back at Carter.
"Well Sam," he started, "It looks like you're free to go. You're
gonna be sore, so take something for that, and don't let your friend
drive anymore."
Josh scowled in the corner.
"I'll go sign the discharge papers and be right back." Carter walked
out the door, and after a brief hesitation, Donna followed.
"Uh, Dr. Carter," she started as she approaced the admit desk.
"Call me John."
"Sure. I wanted to apologize for running out on you yesterday. It was
a weird day, to say the least. I think we're all going out for dinner
later, would you like to join us?"
"I get off at 7, so sure. That would be wonderful." He answered,
smiling.
"Great. We'll see you then."
