Chapter 3

Unfortunately, Josh's meeting with the senator ran over, and it was almost 3:30 by the time he got back to his office. Surprised not to find Donna waiting for him, angry with him for keeping his next appointment waiting, Josh was startled to find Donna and a tall, dark- haired man seated in his office. He stopped a moment outside his office to study Donna. He was annoyed to see her face lit up much the way it did when she talked to him. However, she wasn't talking to him. She was talking to someone else and Josh felt a wave of jealousy wash over him. He stepped into the office.

"I'm sorry I'm late," he apologized, shrugging off his coat.

"Josh!" said Donna, jumping out of her seat. She was usually annoyed at Josh when he would keep people waiting. She usually escorted them to one of the unused conference rooms until she could track down Josh, but since her and Byron had so much to catch up on, she'd brought him into Josh's office. Now that Josh had caught them in his office together, Donna felt guilty. After all, she'd done nothing wrong - it wasn't like she'd left Byron unattended in Josh's office. But she hadn't missed the hurt look that had crossed Josh's face when he walked in the room.

"I'm really sorry," he said, thrusting his hand out to the man seated next to Donna. "Joshua Lyman."

"Byron Newcastle, and don't apologize. It gave me a chance to catch up with Donna," Byron said, glancing at Donna.

Josh was irritated already. Not only could he not remember what Byron had made an appointment for, but he was awfully comfortable with Donna. `Mine,' Josh thought, as an overwhelming feeling of possession ran through him. `She's mine!' his mind silently screamed at Byron, while he moved around his desk saying, "Donna mentioned that you went two went to high school together. I don't suppose you'd care to share any embarrassing stories about her? I couldn't get any out of her this morning," he said, attempting to lighten his own mood.

"Josh!" Donna said shooting him an annoyed glance.

Byron chuckled good naturedly. "Well, that depends on how much you're willing to pay. Donna just gave me $50 to keep quiet."

Donna laughed quietly, beginning to back up out of the office. Annoyed even further that this man could come into his office and banter with Donna, Josh said, "Well, payday isn't for a few more days, so I guess Donna wins."

Donna smiled brightly at Josh from the door. "As usual," she said, then turning her attention to Byron, "It was nice to see you again Byron."

"Good to see you too," answered Byron, who studied her figure as she closed the door softly behind her. It took a few seconds before he turned his attention back to Josh.

In those few short seconds, Josh's rage reached the boiling point, although you wouldn't know it from looking at him. `How dare he look at Donna like she was a piece of meat,' he thought to himself. Still clueless about what this man wanted from him, Josh knew that whatever it was, he wasn't going to get it.

"Wow. A blast from the past," Byron said, as he began riffling for folders from the briefcase placed at his feet.

"Yeah, small world, isn't it?" answered Josh settling back in his chair.
