Later in the day, Josh came around Donna's desk. She was on the phone, scribbling into his schedule book, so he took the opportunity to eat the remainder of her scone. She slapped his hand as she hung up the phone. "Hey, that was mine." "Yes, well it's mine now," he smiled in response, brushing the crumbs from his pant leg as he perched on the corner of her desk. "So, what's on the agenda for the rest of the afternoon?" Donna leaned back in her chair, pulling the schedule towards her lap. "I knew you weren't listening this morning when I ran through your schedule." "I was listening. I just wasn't retaining the information." "Side effect of the pod people taking over, hmm?" Josh sighed dramatically. "See if I buy you coffee tomorrow morning for that remark." "Since I wasn't expecting coffee this morning, I won't hold my breath for a cup tomorrow," she retorted with a smile. "Now, would you like to know how you're going to keep yourself busy this afternoon?" Josh was too busy making a mental note to buy her coffee tomorrow. Maybe he'd buy her another scone, just to keep her guessing. "Joshua." Josh snapped out his daydream. "Hmmm? Okay." Donna regarded him suspiciously. "Are you going to listen and pay attention?" "Do I really have to do both at the same time? It makes my brain hurt," he pleaded. "Me having to repeat your schedule five times a day makes my brain hurt, but do I ever complain?" said Donna. Josh smiled. "Nope. That's why I keep you around." Donna smiled back and opened his schedule. "Enough. It's now 10 minutes from when you're supposed to be all the way across town meeting with Senator Jacobs." Josh frowned at the prospect. "Yuck. Can you cancel?" "On such short notice? I think not. If you'd been paying attention this morning and realized you didn't want to go, then I could have helped you, but as it stands now, you'll just have to spend an excruciating hour with the senator. But you'll be happy to know that the rest of your day is free." Josh smiled, but then frowned again. "No. I forgot to tell you. I'm meeting with Brian something-or-other at 3." "Should I pencil him in as Mr. Something-or-other?" smiled Donna, amused at Josh's complete inability to manage his own schedule. Josh's eyes crinkled in amusement, but he put on his best affronted face. "I remember his name. He's that guy from Defense. Brian Newhouse or Newburg or New…" Donna interrupted him, sitting up straighter in her chair. "Byron Newcastle?" "Yeah, that's his name," quipped Josh, "Now if I could only remember what he wanted to meet about." Donna didn't immediately respond. In fact, she seemed lost in thought. "Hello? Earth to Donna." Donna startled. "Yes?" "What?" "What what?" she asked. "Well it's just that when I mentioned Byron Newcastle you seemed to drift." Donna waved off his comment. "I know him. I went to high school with him." Josh smiled, "So, if I were looking for embarrassing pictures or stories of you during high school, he'd be the guy to ask?" Donna swatted him with her hand. "No. There are no embarrassing pictures or stories about me from high school. I was a model student." "I highly doubt that Donnatella." "Think what you like," she smiled in response. "I'll never tell. Now what time will he be here, again?" "3 o'clock." "Well, if you don't get going, you're going to miss your 1 o'clock meeting with the senator." "Ugh. I'm going. I'm going," said Josh, reluctantly pushing himself up from the corner of her desk and heading into his office.
