Chapter 13 Conclusion

She napped most of the afternoon and was ready by 6:30. Josh rang her doorbell a little before 7.

She had dressed in black pants and a gray cashmere sweater set. She'd left her hair in a ponytail, because she was too tired to do anything with it. Josh was dressed in black pants too and a blue/black silk shirt.

"Hi," she said.

"Hi," he said, noticing that she looked better than when he'd left her. "Ready?" He wanted to ask how she was doing, but this evening was for them and he didn't want to bring up anything unpleasant.

"Yeah," she said, reaching to her hall table for her bag and snapping off her entryway light.

They walked silently down to Josh's car, where he opened her door again. Donna again reached over and popped the lock on his door.

Josh was about to start up the car, when Donna's hand stilled his. "Josh?"

He turned towards her.

"I don't want to talk about what happened last night, but I do want to say thank you. Thank you for getting me out of there. Thank you forholding me and thank you for staying last night. You are a very special man and I'm so grateful that you're in my life." She pulled his palm to her lips and kissed it.

"Donna…"

"Nope, Josh. We're not going to talk about it anymore."

"But Donna…"

"Josh. Please stop. It's over and done with. I'm fine. You're fine. Let's just start from here, okay?"

"Donna…"

"Josh, please."

Josh finally put his fingertips over Donna's lips. "If you'd let me get a word in edgewise, Ms. Moss," he said.

She raised her eyebrows at him, but she nodded her head.

"I wasn't going to say anything about last night. I was, however, going to tell you how incredibly grateful I am that you are in my life. That I've never met anyone like you before. Someone who combines beauty and grace with intelligence and wit. Someone with the biggest heart on the planet. Someone who keeps me in line and keeps up with me. Someone who I've fallen in love with and who I want to spend more time with," he ended, whispering the last part.

Donna's mouth was still behind Josh's fingers and he felt her exhale against them. Her eyes had widened and filled with tears. She reached up to move his hand, but he stopped her.

"Donna, I don't want to push you. I know you're upset right now, but I want you to know that whenever you're ready, I'm going to be right here. I've loved you for so long, that I think I can wait a little longer." He smiled shyly at her.

"Josh," she whispered behind his fingers.

He moved his fingers and replaced them with a soft kiss to her lips. As the kiss ended, Donna moved her hand over his heart and whispered, "I love you too."

Josh pulled her forehead to meet his and whispered back that he loved her. "Let's get some dinner, okay?" he asked.

She nodded, smiling as he wiped the tears from her cheeks. He gave her another quick kiss and turned the car on.

Holding her hand, he put the car into gear and drove them into the night.

The End
