Heat Wave- Part 5

Wednesday night Caitlin hurried into the residence of the White House, nearly knocking over Zoey and Charlie.

"You're going to be late." Zoey said watching her sister, as she ran towards an empty bedroom with her dress folded over her arm.

"I know, I know. I got stuck in traffic on the way back from Rachel's."

"Why didn't you just have the Secret Service turn on their sirens and blow through the traffic?" Charlie asked.

Caitlin stopped and turned around her face a little bewildered.

"You forgot you could do that didn't you?' Charlie continued.

"Yes. But besides its a horrible abuse of power."

"Well you'd better hurry, everyone's already here and I heard that the Ambassador has been asking about you." Zoey said smiling at her sister.

"Really?" Caitlin asked smiling back.

"Yep. He is dreamy. The perfect anti-Sam remedy I'd say."

"Go away Zoey. Charlie please take her to the party and tell my father I'll be right down."

"Sure thing Caitlin." Charlie said pulling Zoey towards the elevator. "You really need to mind your own business at times." He continued to Zoey.

"What's the fun in that?" she asked taking his arm.

Thirty minutes later Caitlin headed towards the State Room where the reception was being held.

"You know if I didn't know what an insufferable brat you are, I'd make a move on you, looking the way you do." A voice from behind her called out.

Caitlin turned. "Very funny Josh. Care to escort me inside?"

"It would be my pleasure." He said coming over and offering her his arm.

"Where's Joey?" Caitlin asked.

"Inside with Donna."

"Really they're in there together?" Caitlin asked aloud, a little surprised Donna put herself in that situation knowing her roommate's feelings for Josh.

"Why wouldn't they be?" Josh asked confused.

"Um, no reason." Caitlin said walking towards the door. 'Good job Caitlin'

The two Marines at the door opened them wide for Caitlin and Josh to walk through. As they entered, every eye in the room turned to see the President's daughter. Josh and Caitlin made their way down the stairs over to her father, mother, and the Ambassador. "Look who I found wandering the halls." Josh said releasing Caitlin's arm.

"I'm sorry I'm late. I got caught in rush hour traffic on the Beltway." Caitlin said giving her parents a kiss.

"Why didn't you have the Secret Service turn on the sirens?" The President asked.

"And miss an opportunity to make a grand entrance?" Caitlin replied smiling.

"Me Dios, you certainly did that." The Ambassador said smiling at Caitlin.

Across the room Sam stood with Mallory, Toby, and CJ. He watched Caitlin talk to the Ambassador. He had watched her since she entered the room. He had never seen her look so beautiful before. 'What is going on with me? I'm here with a beautiful woman. But I can't get Caitlin out of my mind.'

The evening progressed with the Ambassador hardly leaving Caitlin's side and Sam not taking his eyes off of her. Mallory tried to get his attention several times, but eventually gave up, as the truth she was trying to deny forced itself upon her. "I'm going to dance with my father." Mallory said to Sam, needing to get away.

"Sure, ok." Sam said turning to her. 'I've been a horrible date' he thought. 'She deserves better then this.' He turned and walked over to the bar. He ordered a scotch on the rocks and tried to forget everything about the evening. Suddenly he felt a hand on his shoulder. He turned to find Caitlin smiling at him. "Hi." she said softly.

"Hi" he said back quickly glancing to make sure the Ambassador was no where around.

"I haven't seen you much tonight. Are you having a good time?" Caitlin asked him.

"It's ok. It could be better." He replied watching her closely.

"Really? I'm sorry. Would a dance help?' Caitlin said holding out her hand to him smiling.

Sam looked at her hand. He wanted so much to take it and hold her in his arms. But he couldn't. Too many things were happening to him, he was afraid of what might happen with this one dance. "Actually, I don't dance." Sam lied.

"What? I danced with you at the Inaugural Ball." Caitlin said confused.

"Well I just don't feel like dancing tonight." Sam said harshly.

"Ok, I understand. I'll leave you alone." Caitlin said a little hurt by his attitude.

"No, Caitlin..."

"Well there you are. Tell me Senorita Bartlet, do you know how to rumba?" Ambassador Castille said coming up to Sam and Caitlin.

Caitlin turned to the Ambassador and flashed him a bright smile. "I learned once but I'm not sure I remember."

"It is your lucky day then. I have been told that I am a wonderful teacher."

"And I, sir, am an incredibly fast learner." Caitlin said playfully with a hint of seductiveness.

The Ambassador held out his hand and led Caitlin out to the dance floor, as he cued the band to start the rumba. Sam stared at them helplessly, feeling as if someone held his heart in a death grip.
